Residents of Crestwood live here for it’s beautiful tree-lined streets, quick access to the Edmonton river valley and close proximity to downtown. It’s most famously known for Candy Cane Lane, a favourite Christmas tradition in Edmonton. This desirable area is bordered by two ravines offers incredible views of the Edmonton river valley. Location

Crestwood is located east of 149th street, surrounded by McKinnon Ravine Park to the north and the river valley to the east. The southern border is another ravine, located just south of 95th street. View Crestwood’s neighbourhood boundaries.  

History

Crestwood was developed post war era with most of the homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. The name “Crestwood” was chosen by residents through a vote held by City Council in the 1960s. Many of the original homes in Crestwood are still here, with new custom infill housing sprinkled throughout residential streets. Living in a well-established neighbourhood means plenty of mature trees, large city lots and a deep-rooted community.

There are 2 elementary schools, St. Paul’s School and Crestwood Elementary School, in Crestwood with junior high and high schools located nearby. Here you will also find 5 churches, several parks, commercial services, boutique shops, restaurants, cafes, curling rink and the Crestwood Community League, which was established in 1917 and is the oldest community league in the city of Edmonton. West Edmonton Mall and downtown are a short drive away, providing plenty of options for dining, shopping and entertainment. Healthcare services, including the Misericordia Community Hospital are located nearby.

This little west Edmonton neighbourhood is packed with the best things the city has to offer. Access to the Edmonton river valley and the McKinnon Ravine allows residents to quickly escape into nature. For a west Edmonton neighbourhood, Crestwood is also very close to downtown. A short drive will put you in the heart of the city in 15 minutes, whether you’re there for work or to take advantage of the shopping, dining, entertainment, arts and culture located in downtown Edmonton.

The homes in Crestwood are built on spacious lots and are surrounded by mature trees providing privacy and shade. Shopping centres and amenities are within walking distance of many homes, giving the neighbourhood a great walkability score. Because the quality of life is so high here, the housing market is very strong. In fact, some of the most expensive properties in the city are in Crestwood, indicating how much people love living here and how much non-residents wish they did too.

According to the 2016 Census, over 85% of the homes in Crestwood are single detached homes. Crestwood has a few row-home complexes and low-rise apartment condo buildings, but most of the homes in this west Edmonton neighbourhood are detached family homes. As mentioned, most residents own their homes and the rental market here is almost non-existent.

The age, size and style of the homes is varied. You’ll find character bungalows from the 1950s, large two-story homes and a range of custom infill housing that has been built within the last several decades. House prices are considered very high compared to other Edmonton neighbourhoods, but still have a range.

Crestwood Demographics

The people who live in Crestwood have either lived here for decades or have recently moved into the neighbourhood to raise a family. According to the 2016 Census, most residents are married couples, with and without children at home. The largest age demographic is 55 to 59, with much of the population ranging from their 40s to retirement age. The majority of residents own their own home with only 11% renting. Pride in ownership and the community, along with the higher income required to live here, are something they all have in common.
